From one pane of glass to an insulated unit
A lot of San Diego houses still have one pane of glass in an aluminum frame. The upgrade is either a new insulated unit in a sound frame or a full window if the frame should go too. Fog between two panes is a different problem: the seal failed, and sometimes only the glass assembly is replaced. Pane Pro SD refers a contractor who should tell you which of those you have.
What's included in this service?
- Refer a contractor who can tell a failed seal from a window that needs to be replaced
- Ask whether the existing frame can accept an insulated unit
- Low-E coatings and the spacer color are visible choices. Get them in the quote
- Whole-house counts should come from a measure, not from a room guess
When do you need this service?
- The house still has single-pane aluminum
- A dual-pane unit looks milky or shows droplets between the panes
- West rooms overheat and the glass is original
- You want insulated glass without opening the wall if the frame allows it
What do homeowners ask about Dual-pane upgrade?
Is fog between the panes a dirty window?
No. If you cannot wipe it off from either room side or the outside, the seal between the panes has failed. Surface haze wipes off. Trapped moisture does not.
Does a second pane stop condensation on the room side?
It can, because the indoor face of the glass stays warmer. It does not fix a house that is producing a lot of indoor moisture. Ask the contractor what you are actually seeing.
Are there rebates?
Programs open and close. Confirm any utility or tax credit with the agency that offers it, on the date you buy. This site does not promise one.
Can you upgrade one window?
Yes. A single failed unit does not require a whole-house order. Match the glass and the frame color if the rest of the wall is staying.
